HOUSE RENOVATION, BLEHEN

Client: Wauters-De Greef
Year: 2007 - in progress
Project: Renovation of a single-family dwelling.
The original structure dates back to the 1930's. It lacks all modern comfort and installation.
Only half of the main dwellings were being used as living quarters. There are many additions and a solitary volume is entirely blocking the garden view.
The budget is quite tight, all the rooms are sufficient large to be able to be preserved, but require total renovation.
The owners are particular keen on preserving the charm of the main building and the additions, asking for an intervention that contrasts with the "old building".
The main volume needs purifying and adding light and sun, an addition is required to increase the living quarters.
The concept is to preserve the front facade, leaving its original charm as much as possible.
Demolition of the solitary volume opens-up the view towards the garden.
The existing back facade is in bad shape, and needs to be protected from wind and rain. We propose a new addition with flat roof, its back facade posed as a "portique" L-form on the roof of the main existing addition. Its finish will be in the same material as the protection of the back facade of the main building, thus unifying all additional volumes.
Interior, all connecting spaces will be opened-up towards each other, creating several "rooms" with specific atmosphere, but with great interaction and visibility towards each other and the garden.
The bathroom will be designed as a "cocoon". A lit-up translucident wall will transfer exterior light through the cocoon to the interior hallway. In use, the bathroom is flooded in coloured light. The flat roof of the new addition will serve as terrace for the master bedroom upstairs.
