HOUSE RENOVATION, HAACHT

Client: Schraepen - Van hoeymissen
Year: 2006 - in progress
Project: Renovation of a single-family dwelling.
The original structure dates back to the 1900's. It lacks all modern comfort and installation, and has small windows, leaving a dark interior.
The budget is very tight, not leaving much room for "grand interventions"
The concept is to preserve the main building-volume as it is, and stripping it from all additions, purifying the interior spaces and "opening" them up.
Preserving the impressive original wooden roof structures and rehabilitating the space underneath the roof.
By only doing one single act as a big "cut-out" at the back facade, we provide sun and light into the entire volume.
By creating a set-back from this big "cut-out"-window of the floor at first level, the living rooms at the 2 levels are connected as a very open and light space.
A wooden volume-roof, acting as carport, will be added on the side. The sheltered-entrance roof emphasizes the entrance, and, continuing at the backside floating over the preserved addition, unifies the addition "under one roof"
