| Project: | Working for architect-office ES°TE, I was the project-architect for the 2nd phase design and execution of an IMAGIX-theatre complex of 12 cinema theatres, in Mons, Belgium. Re-styling and addition of an existing theatre-complex. The program asked for an addition of 2 theatres and an extra concession-area, as well as a restyling of the facades of the existing complex, giving it a more appealing “look”, as well as creating a solution for the leakage-problems for the joints of the existing prefab concrete panels. The existing complex, with the addition of 2 new theatres, the enlargement of the entrance-foyer and the creation-n of exit-hallways, is outlined as one solid “box”, with minimalist glass cut-outs, for the entrance and concession-areas inside the existing complex, getting rid of the many projections of the existing façade. In front of this “solid box”, a “banana”-curved and roof-sloped volume creates a much needed dynamic view. This “banana”-volume, is entirely transparent (glass and polycarbonate panels), as a contrast to the “solid box”. A transparent stainless steel sunscreen is suspended at the (south orientated) front façade, providing a high-class finfish for the building. |
